Testing Requirement

6th Kyuu (rokkyu)
5th Kyuu (gokyu)
4th Kyuu (yonkyu)

Rokkyu (30 hours/ 3 months)

  • Tenkan
  • Shomenuchi ikkyo and iriminage
  • Munetsuki kotegaeshi
  • Katate dori shihonage
  • Yokomenuchi shihonage
  • Kokyu tandenho
  • Bokken- shomen and yokomen cuts
  • Jo- first five suburi

Gokyu (60 hours/4months)

  • All previous techniques plus:
  • Shomenuchi nikyo
  • Kata dori ikkyo and nikyo
  • Munetsuki kaitenage
  • Suwariwaza shomenuchi ikkyo
  • Bokken - 7 suburi
  • Jo- first 10 suburi

Yonkyu (60 hours/ 4 months)

  • All previous techniques plus:
  • suwariwaza
    • Shomenuchi ikkyo to yonkyo
    • Katadori ikkyo to yonkyo
  • Shomenuchi sankyo and yonkyo
  • Yokomenuchi ikkyo, kotegaeshi and iriminage
  • Ryote dori tenchinage and shihonage
  • Katate dori ryote mochi kokyu tanden ho
  • Bokken- 1st 5 kumitachi
  • Jo-20 suburi and 13 step form

Sankyu (70 hours/ 4 months)

  • All previous techniques plus: hanmihandachi
  • Shomenuchi iriminage
  • Tsuki kotegaishi
  • Katatedori shihonage
  • Ushiro ryokata dori ikkyo
  • Ushiro ryote dori shihonage
  • Ushiro kubi shime kotegaeshi
  • Ushiro waza kokyunage
  • Bokken-1st 5 kumitachi
  • Jo- 31 step kata and 6 kumijo

Nikyu (80 hours/6 months)

  • All previous techniques plus:
  • Yokomenuchi nikyo, sankyo, and yonkyo
  • Koshinage from shomenuchi, yokomenuchi, Katate dori, and munetsuki
  • Hanmi handachi:
    • Tsuki kaitenage
    • Ryote dori shihonage
  • Suwariwaza:
    • Yokomenuchi ikkyo to yonkyo
    • Bokken: kumitachi (6-10)
    • Bo-ikyo and nikyo forms

Ikkyu (90 hours/6 month)

  • All previous techniques plus:
  • Koshinage from all basic attacks
  • Jiyu waza:(free form)
    • Standing
    • Hanmi handachi
    • Suwariwaza
  • Jujinage Tanto dori:
    • Munetsuki (front and back)
    • Shomenuchi combinations
    • Yokomenuchi combinations
    • Kubeshime (or knife to throat)
    • Double slash
  • Bokken: kumitachi 1-10 (shinai, full speed)
  • Tachi dori (from basic attacks)
  • Jo dori (from basic attacks)
    • Uke attacking with a jo
    • Uke grabbing the end of jo you are holding
  • Jo: kumijo 1-6 (full speed)
